Legend of Luke has been and probably will be my favorite Redwall book. The story is fantastic, a supplicant to help explain Martin's past and life, why he is so heroic is given full light in this, one of Brian Jacque's best stories.
We learn that Martin's courage and bravery are in his blood. His father, a heroic mouse who saw his tribe and wife killed in a raid by a dastardly corsair stoat, Vilu Daskar.
Martin arrives in his homeland, to meet three elderly survivors of the colony where his father lived. They begin to unravel the story to Martin and it is in this that we see- Martin is not a hero by chance. It is in his blood.
The adventures and epic battles of Luke stir the blood. Jacques is not afraid, as are some children's writers, of death in his narratives and it is that which helps endear these books. The deaths of those who gave their lives for freedom and the right rings throughout all of the many Redwall books.
Luke's final battle between himself and Daskar, upon return to the tall cliffs, is epic in its purest sense. The humanity Jacque gives to stoats and mice is astounding and we see that not all heros fight another day.
Luke is altogether a wonderful book, worthy of any and all awards bestowed upon it and I highly recommend you read it sometime or around the time you read Martin the Warrior. It is because of books like this I love reading....Eulalia!
